A well-fitting PFD is one of the most important pieces of gear you own. Too loose and it rides up in the water. Too tight and it restricts your movement. Either way your safety is compromised. Here's how to get the right fit.
Why fit matters
A 50N PFD keeps you afloat in an emergency - but only if it fits correctly. As Vaikobi CEO Pat Langley puts it: "A life jacket should fit so well that you should not even know it's there when you're doing your sport, which means you are more likely to wear it every time you hit the water."
How to measure for a PFD
Three measurements are all you need:
- Chest - measure around the widest part of your chest, just under your armpits.
- Waist - measure around your natural waistline.
- Torso length - measure from the base of your neck to the top of your hips.
Once you have these measurements refer to the Vaikobi size guide to find your correct size.
Checking the fit
When trying on a PFD keep these three things in mind:
- Full range of motion - you should be able to move your arms freely without restriction.
- Position on the body - the PFD should sit securely on your torso without riding up toward your chin or face.
- Weight range - check that your weight falls within the range specified in the size guide.
